Throughout history, malachite has been employed as a means of safeguarding against harm and combating diseases. It is believed to shield individuals from accidents and is commonly utilized for its healing properties by being placed on injured areas to aid in tissue regeneration and recovery. History tell us that Ancient Egypt, around 4,000 BC, was the first civilisation known to utilise malachite for decoration. They incorporated this ornamental stone into their jewelry and artwork. The malachite was sourced from King Solomon’s notorious copper mines on the Red Sea. Through archaeological discoveries, evidence has been found of Egyptian tomb paintings where malachite gemstones were ground to create paint, adding color to the walls. It was also finely ground and mixed with galena, forming a thick paste called kohl, which was then applied to the eyelids for cosmetic purposes and as protection against evil. The vibrant green malachite kohl is believed to have been Cleopatra’s preferred cosmetic, as she was laid to rest accompanied by a large jar of it, intended for her use in the afterlife.
